Outside the office, Dr. Shu dedicates his time to community activism. After forming the Minnesota Chinese Physician Association (AMCP) in 2003, he led its members and community volunteers in establishing the Minnesota Chinese Health Center (MCHC), a free clinic for disadvantaged Chinese in the Twin Cities. In the recent years, Dr.Shu has joined an international medical mission to the Philippines and Haiti as part of a global effort to promote and provide free No-Scalpel Vasectomy services to reduce poverty in developing countries with rapid population growth.

Mission of 2015

Dr.Shu joined the Philippine medical mission in February 2015. Ten guest vasectomists and four helpers from six countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, and Ireland) shared their skills and knowledge with the needy families of Cebu, Danao, and Tuburan in Philippine, with the medical students of Southwestern University College of Medicine, and with six doctors visiting from Davao, Mindanao.

The medical mission is sponsored by No Scalpel Vasectomy International Inc. (NSVI), which has been providing free NSV services since 2001. The mission of NSVI is to promote and provide free No-Scalpel Vasectomy services worldwide, but especially in developing countries whose infrastructure and environmental resources are challenged by rapid population growth unchecked by established and/or effective family planning programs.
