Nasolaryngoscopy

Colonoscopy | Gastroscopy | Nasolaryngoscopy | Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible nasolaryngoscopy is an examination of your nose, voicebox, and upper respiratory tract. A small, flexible, fiberoptic scope is inserted into one side of the nose so that your doctor can see the curves and small spaces of your nose and larynx.

There is no preparation for this procedure. You may feel a tickling sensation when the scope is first placed inside your nose. Most people don’t experience much discomfort after that. Although rare, possible effects include vomiting, bleeding, sneezing, coughing, or gagging.

Your nose will be sprayed with a decongestant and an anesthetic. The scope will be slid to the back of the nose, and then down the throat to your voice box. As the scope is being withdrawn, your nose will be examined.

The procedure usually takes just a few minutes. If any significant problems are found, you may need to take medicine or see a nose or throat specialist. You should be able to resume normal activities right away, but avoid eating or drinking until the numbness in your throat has worn off.
